UGANDA’S FIRST MGAHINGA LODGE, WITH BUTLER SERVICE AND ITS OWN SPA
Opened in 2002 as the first lodge built in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Mount Gahinga Lodge sits in the foothills of the Virunga volcanoes with Mgahinga, Sabyinyo, and Muhabura visible from the property. It remains the most established luxury base for Uganda’s smallest national park.
Personal butler service is included for every stay, alongside complimentary spa treatments at the lodge’s Gushimisha Spa & Sauna — including the Rungu massage, a treatment specific to the property.
ROOMS
Eight stone-and-thatch bandas built in the traditional style of the local Bufumbira people, each with an en-suite luxury shower room, fireplace, and private porch facing the volcanoes.
DINING
Meals lean on garden-grown vegetables and Ugandan produce, served in the main lounge built around a copper-hooded stone fireplace — a distinctive centrepiece for evenings after a trek or hike.
WILDLIFE & NATURE
Mgahinga is Uganda’s smallest national park and home to a single habituated gorilla family, the Nyakagezi group, alongside golden monkey trekking and hikes up Mounts Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabyinyo — all reachable directly from the lodge.
GOOD TO KNOW
Mount Gahinga Lodge sits closer to its park’s activities than almost any comparable property — golden monkey trekking, the Nyakagezi gorilla family, and all three volcano hikes begin a short drive or walk from the bandas. Days here typically pair one activity — a morning golden monkey trek or a full-day volcano climb — with an afternoon of rest at the spa, since Mgahinga’s activities rarely fill an entire day the way Bwindi or Volcanoes National Park treks can. Evenings centre on the lounge’s copper-hooded fireplace, a genuinely distinctive gathering point after a cold mountain day.
Because the lodge has operated here since 2002, the staff’s familiarity with the park and its rangers runs deep — a practical advantage when planning which activity suits your group’s fitness and interests on any given day.
Mount Gahinga Lodge suits travellers prioritising Mgahinga’s specific strengths — reliable, year-round golden monkey trekking, the three volcano hikes, and a quieter, less-visited park than Bwindi or Volcanoes National Park — over guaranteed gorilla access, since Mgahinga has only a single gorilla family with variable availability. It is a strong choice for hikers, birders, and travellers building a Uganda itinerary that combines the Nkuringo sector of Bwindi with Mgahinga’s volcano trails, given the short distance between the two.
GETTING THERE
The lodge sits near Kisoro in Uganda’s far southwest, roughly 8–9 hours by road from Kampala or Entebbe — most itineraries fly instead, via Kisoro’s airstrip, served by scheduled light-aircraft flights from Entebbe in under two hours. Because Kisoro is also the access town for Bwindi’s Nkuringo sector, the lodge combines naturally with a gorilla trek there on the same trip without a long additional transfer.
Is gorilla trekking guaranteed from Mount Gahinga Lodge?
No — Mgahinga has a single gorilla family, the Nyakagezi group, whose presence in the park varies. We
confirm availability before booking and typically recommend pairing a Mgahinga stay with confirmed gorilla
trekking at nearby Bwindi rather than relying on Mgahinga alone.
What’s included in the Rungu massage?
It’s the lodge’s signature spa treatment, complimentary for guests at the Gushimisha Spa &
Sauna — a distinctive touch few comparable properties in the region offer.
How does this compare to staying near Bwindi
instead?
Mount Gahinga Lodge is the right choice if Mgahinga’s volcano hikes and golden monkey trekking are your
priority; for guaranteed gorilla trekking, a Bwindi-sector lodge like
Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge or Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge
is the more reliable base.
Can we do a Batwa cultural tour from the
lodge?
Yes — Batwa community cultural tours are arranged directly from the property, a meaningful addition for
guests interested in the region’s human history alongside its wildlife.
How many nights should we plan here?
Two nights covers a single volcano hike or golden monkey trek comfortably; three nights allows both, or a
rest day at the spa between activities.
Is the lodge suitable for less active travellers?
Yes — golden monkey trekking is genuinely accessible for most fitness levels, and the lodge, spa, and
fireplace lounge offer plenty to enjoy without attempting the more demanding volcano hikes. We tailor the
activity mix to your group’s fitness when planning the itinerary.
WHY THIS LODGE
Mount Gahinga Lodge has operated at the Mgahinga boundary since 2002, longer than most comparable properties in the region, and that history shows in the quality of the staff’s local knowledge and the relationships built with park rangers over two decades. Combined with genuinely distinctive touches — included butler service, the on-site spa, the Bufumbira-style bandas — the lodge offers a level of established comfort and character that newer properties in less-visited parks often struggle to match. For travellers who want Mgahinga’s quieter trails without sacrificing the polish of a well-run luxury property, it remains the benchmark option, and the one we recommend most often when Mgahinga forms part of a client’s itinerary.
