Kigali Genocide Memorial
The resting place of more than 250,000 victims of the 1994 genocide, and the country’s central site of remembrance and education.
Most gorilla itineraries pass through Kigali at the start or end of the trip — often just for a night. It’s worth more than that. Rwanda’s capital and the historic royal seat of Nyanza hold some of the country’s most important cultural and historical sites, easily built into a day either side of your trek.

GOOD TO KNOW
SAMPLE DAY
Most guests start at the Kigali Genocide Memorial, in the Gisozi district, allowing two to three hours. It is a sombre visit and worth doing first, while you are fresh; the memorial explains how the 1994 genocide happened and how the country has rebuilt since, which gives context to everything else you will see in Rwanda.
After lunch the day usually lightens: the Kimironko Market for fabric and produce, the Inema Arts Center and other galleries for contemporary Rwandan art, or a walk through Nyamirambo, one of the city’s oldest and liveliest neighbourhoods. A full day south to the King’s Palace at Nyanza and the Ethnographic Museum at Huye works best on a separate day, or on the way to Nyungwe National Park, which lies further south on the same road.
One practical note: on the last Saturday of every month, Rwanda holds Umuganda, a national community-work morning. Most businesses close and traffic is restricted until around midday, so we schedule city activities for the afternoon on those dates.
How long do we need in Kigali?
Half a day covers the Genocide Memorial and one other stop. A full day allows the memorial, a market and a gallery at an easy pace.
Is the Genocide Memorial suitable for children?
Parts of the exhibition are graphic. Many families visit with teenagers; for younger children, we suggest discussing it with the memorial staff on arrival or visiting the gardens only.
Is Kigali safe to explore?
Kigali is widely regarded as one of Africa’s safest and cleanest capitals. We still arrange a private guide and vehicle, mainly so you can cover more ground in the time you have.
Can we do this on arrival or departure day?
Yes — this is the most common way. With an evening flight out, a morning or afternoon in the city fits easily around check-out.
