Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Golden monkeys and volcano hikes on the Ugandan side of the Virunga massif.
VIEW DETAILS ↗Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage rainforest in south-western Uganda — roughly 25,000 years old, and one of the few places on earth where the forest has stood largely uninterrupted since before the last Ice Age. It is home to roughly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, spread across more than 20 habituated families in four trekking sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo.
Bwindi is denser and steeper than Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park — ancient, tangled rainforest rather than open bamboo slopes — and its four sectors mean shorter transfers and a genuinely different trekking experience depending on which family you’re assigned. Permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), a separate system from Rwanda’s RDB.
Which sector you trek from shapes your whole Bwindi experience — access, lodge options, and trail character all differ meaningfully between them.
We assign your sector based on where you’re staying, your fitness level, and whether the Gorilla Habituation Experience interests you — not simply whichever family happens to be available. Tell us your priorities early in planning, since lodge availability in the sector you want can be the limiting factor rather than the permit itself, particularly in peak months.
WHEN TO GO
Bwindi’s name is not an exaggeration — the “Impenetrable Forest” is genuinely dense, steep, and often muddy underfoot, and treks here are generally considered more physically demanding than at Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. Trek duration ranges from under an hour to six-plus hours of walking each way depending on the family’s location, and Nkuringo and Ruhija sectors in particular involve sustained, steep gradients.
Which sector should I choose?
Buhoma for the easiest access and widest lodge choice, Rushaga if the Gorilla Habituation Experience
interests you, Ruhija for birding alongside gorillas, and Nkuringo only if you want the most demanding trek
and the best volcano views. We’ll recommend based on your specific priorities.
What’s the difference between Uganda and
Rwanda gorilla trekking?
Uganda’s standard permit costs less ($800 versus $1,500), the forest is denser and generally more
physically demanding, and Uganda offers the unique Gorilla Habituation Experience. Rwanda offers easier
access from Kigali and, at Volcanoes National Park, open bamboo-slope terrain that many find less strenuous.
See our combined Uganda & Rwanda itinerary if you want
to compare both directly on one trip.
How do I get to Bwindi?
Most itineraries fly by light aircraft from Entebbe directly to an airstrip near your chosen sector —
roughly 1–1.5 hours — rather than the 8–10 hour road transfer, which we generally only
recommend if you’re combining Bwindi with other parks en route.
Can I combine Bwindi with the Batwa Cultural
Trail?
Yes — the Batwa Cultural Trail is a genuinely worthwhile half-day add-on available at several sectors,
walking through the forest with guides from the community that lived in Bwindi before it was gazetted as a
national park. See our Batwa Cultural Trail page for details.
Is Bwindi trekking safe?
Yes — UWA rangers accompany every group, armed escorts are standard practice in case of wildlife
encounters other than the gorillas themselves, and the park has an excellent long-term safety record for
tourism. The greater practical risk is the physical demand of the terrain rather than any security concern.
GORILLA TREKKING PERMITS AT BWINDI
UWA’s standard trekking permit for a one-hour encounter with a fully habituated gorilla family — Uganda’s most accessible gorilla permit, with more availability than Rwanda’s equivalent overall.
UWA’s signature private product, available only at Rushaga sector — up to four hours with a family still being habituated, alongside the research team and trackers who work with them daily.
BEYOND GORILLA TREKKING
We arrange these as part of a combined Bwindi itinerary, using the same private guide and transport that accompanies your gorilla trek.
A community-run forest walk led by Batwa guides, Bwindi’s original forest-dwelling people.
$50 PER PERSONA guided walk through Buhoma village on the edge of Bwindi, visiting local artisans and a traditional dance performance.
$25 PER PERSONUganda’s “Switzerland” — a scenic crater lake near Bwindi with traditional canoe trips and island hopping.
FROM $30 PER PERSONGETTING THERE
Bwindi is roughly an eight to nine hour drive from Entebbe, so most private itineraries use a scenic light-aircraft charter instead — around 1.5 hours, landing at one of several airstrips near the park depending on which sector you’re trekking.
We arrange charter flights as part of your itinerary so the transfer itself becomes part of the trip rather than a full lost travel day.
Ground teams in both Rwanda and Uganda mean real-time support before, during, and after your trek, whichever border you’re crossing.
We purchase permits up to a year in advance, so your dates and sector assignment are never left to chance.
We know which of Bwindi’s four sectors best fits your fitness level and interests before you book.
A share of every trek funds ranger salaries and village health & education projects around the park.
