Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Uganda’s main gorilla trekking destination, across four trekking sectors.
VIEW DETAILS ↗Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is Uganda’s smallest national park at just 33.7km², tucked into the far southwest corner of the country where Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo meet. It shares the Virunga volcanic chain — Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabyinyo — with Volcanoes National Park across the Rwandan border, part of the same trans-boundary ecosystem and the same gorilla population.
Gorilla trekking here centres on the Nyakagezi family, Uganda’s only regularly trekked group at Mgahinga. Because the Virunga massif has no internal fences, this family sometimes ranges into Rwanda or DR Congo for weeks at a time, so permit availability can be more limited and less predictable than at Bwindi — we treat Mgahinga as a bonus add-on rather than the anchor of a Uganda itinerary, and confirm gorilla availability directly with UWA before booking.
Because gorilla availability at Mgahinga genuinely varies week to week, most itineraries build the visit around the park’s other strengths rather than gorilla trekking alone.
All three volcanoes are shared with Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park across the border, so the views and terrain are genuinely comparable — Mgahinga simply offers the Uganda-side access point and generally sees far fewer hikers on the trail.
Golden monkey trekking at Mgahinga is genuinely accessible — flatter terrain and a shorter approach than gorilla trekking, generally a two to four hour round trip suitable for most fitness levels. The three volcano hikes are a different proposition entirely: full-day climbs of 4,000m-plus through successive vegetation zones, each requiring a real baseline of fitness and, for Muhabura in particular, genuine stamina given the summit’s exposure and altitude.
PARK HISTORY
Like Bwindi, Mgahinga was ancestral forest home to the Batwa people before it was gazetted as a national park in 1991, displacing communities who had lived within the forest for generations as hunter-gatherers. That history is part of why community-linked tourism — cultural walks, craft sales, and revenue-sharing arrangements with neighbouring Batwa communities — is woven into how the park operates today, and it’s worth building a Batwa cultural visit into your itinerary here if the history and human context of the region interests you as much as the wildlife.
Mgahinga sits near Kisoro, in Uganda’s far southwest, roughly 8–9 hours by road from Kampala or Entebbe — a genuinely long drive that most itineraries avoid by flying instead. Kisoro has its own airstrip served by scheduled light-aircraft flights from Entebbe, typically under two hours in the air, which is how we route the overwhelming majority of our Mgahinga itineraries.
Because Kisoro is also the access town for Bwindi’s Nkuringo sector, the two parks combine naturally on a single Uganda itinerary without a long additional transfer — a gorilla trek at Nkuringo one day and a golden monkey trek or volcano hike at Mgahinga the next is a genuinely efficient way to see both without backtracking across the country.
WHEN TO GO
Should I choose Mgahinga or Bwindi for gorilla trekking?
Bwindi, if gorilla trekking is your primary goal — it has over 20 reliably trekkable families versus
Mgahinga’s single family with variable availability. Mgahinga makes more sense as a golden monkey and
volcano-hiking destination, or as an add-on if you’re already routing near the Uganda–Rwanda
border.
Can I hike more than one volcano in a single
visit?
Yes, though each is a separate full-day activity, so most itineraries allow one hike per day with a rest or
lower-intensity day between them if attempting two.
How does Mgahinga combine with a Rwanda
itinerary?
Well — Mgahinga sits directly across the border from Volcanoes National Park, making it a natural
add-on for travellers doing a combined Uganda & Rwanda circuit rather than a standalone destination.
See our Uganda & Rwanda Combined Itinerary for a sample
routing.
What’s the accommodation situation?
Mount Gahinga Lodge is the standout property directly at the park boundary; most other options are a short
drive away in the wider Kisoro area. See our Mount Gahinga Lodge page for
details.
Is golden monkey trekking here as good as at
Volcanoes National Park?
Yes — it’s genuinely one of only two places on earth with a habituated golden monkey population
open for trekking, the other being Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park across the border. The experience
and species are the same; the difference is simply which country’s access point suits your itinerary.
Do I need a separate visa to add Mgahinga to a
Rwanda trip?
Yes — Mgahinga is in Uganda, so a standard Uganda visa (or the East Africa Tourist Visa, which covers
Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya on one application) applies in addition to your Rwanda entry requirements. We
handle the logistics of a combined itinerary, but the visa itself is your responsibility to arrange in
advance.
MGAHINGA PARK EXPERIENCES
The same Virunga golden monkey population as Rwanda, trekked from the Ugandan side of the massif — a reliable alternative when gorilla permits aren’t available.
$100 PER PERSONDay hikes up Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabyinyo — the same Virunga volcanoes shared with Rwanda, from the Ugandan trailheads.
FROM $80 PER PERSONA community-run forest walk led by Batwa guides, also offered from the Mgahinga side of the massif.
$50 PER PERSONGETTING THERE
Mgahinga sits just outside Kisoro town, roughly a 40-minute drive from Kisoro Airstrip and about an hour from Bwindi’s Rushaga sector — most itineraries visit Mgahinga as a short detour on the way between Bwindi and the Rwanda border, rather than a standalone destination.
