INTIMATE TENTED CAMPS TO FIVE-STAR RAINFOREST RETREATS
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest has the widest range of lodge styles of any gorilla trekking destination — from simple, comfortable tented camps to architect-designed rainforest retreats, spread across four trekking sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo.
We choose your lodge based on which sector your permit is assigned to — staying close to your trailhead means a shorter drive on trekking mornings and more time in the forest.
ROOMS
Room styles vary by property and sector, from canvas-walled tented rooms on raised decks to stone-and-thatch cottages and multi-room family suites. Whichever style suits your group, every room we book has an en-suite bathroom, mosquito netting, and either a veranda or deck facing the forest.
DINING
Most Bwindi properties serve set three-course dinners built around Ugandan produce — matoke, groundnut sauce, and forest-grown coffee alongside international dishes for varied palates. Many lodges overlook the forest canopy from an open-air dining deck.
WILDLIFE & NATURE
Bwindi is home to roughly half the world’s remaining mountain gorillas across more than 20 habituated families, plus over 350 recorded bird species and forest elephants, L’Hoest’s monkeys, and chimpanzees within the wider ecosystem.
Because your lodge is determined by which sector your gorilla permit is assigned to, the real decision usually happens earlier — when we help you choose a sector based on fitness level, group composition, and what else you want on your itinerary. Buhoma suits first-time trekkers and families wanting the gentlest terrain and widest lodge selection. Ruhija suits birders and travellers wanting a quieter, cooler base at higher altitude. Rushaga suits repeat trekkers, larger groups, and anyone booked on the Gorilla Habituation Experience, given its concentration of habituated families. Nkuringo suits the more physically adventurous, given its steeper terrain, and travellers routing toward Rwanda given its border proximity.
Whichever sector you’re assigned to, we match your lodge to it directly rather than booking a property in a different sector and accepting a longer transfer — staying close to your trailhead consistently makes for a better trekking morning and more time actually in the forest.
GETTING THERE
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park sits in Uganda’s far southwest, 8–10 hours by road from Kampala or Entebbe depending on which sector you’re trekking — a long drive most itineraries avoid by flying instead. Kihihi airstrip serves Buhoma and Ruhija sectors, while Kisoro airstrip serves Rushaga and Nkuringo — both reachable from Entebbe by scheduled light-aircraft flights in under two hours. We route your flight to whichever airstrip matches your assigned sector as part of your private itinerary.
Can we choose our own sector, or is it assigned?
We work with you to select a sector based on fitness, group size, and lodge preference, then arrange the
permit for that sector — so within the limits of permit availability, the choice is genuinely yours.
Can we stay in one sector and trek in
another?
No — permits are sector-specific, and trekking groups depart from their assigned sector’s
headquarters each morning, so your lodge needs to match your permit’s sector.
Which sector has the best lodges overall?
Buhoma has the widest range given its history as the original sector; Rushaga and Nkuringo have strong
newer and award-winning options; Ruhija has fewer choices but rewards travellers prioritising quiet and
birding. We can recommend specific properties once we know your sector.
Is one sector safer or more reliable than
others?
All four sectors operate under the same UWA management and safety standards — the differences between
them are terrain, altitude, and lodge character, not safety or reliability.
How many nights should we plan in Bwindi
overall?
Two nights covers a single trekking permit comfortably at any sector; three nights allows a rest day, a
second trekking attempt, or time for sector-specific activities like the Buhoma Village Walk or Batwa
Cultural Trail.
Do lodge prices vary significantly between
sectors?
Each sector spans a similar range from comfortable mid-range camps to ultra-luxury properties, so price
depends more on the specific lodge you choose than on which sector it sits in.
Regardless of sector or price point, staying near Bwindi means accepting the same practical realities: cool, often misty mornings before a trekking briefing, no reliable mobile signal at most properties, and evenings built around an early dinner ahead of the next day’s early start. What varies is the level of comfort wrapped around that experience — from simple tented camps with shared facilities to architect-designed suites with private plunge pools — but the underlying rhythm of a Bwindi stay, oriented entirely around the forest and the trek, stays consistent across every sector and every price point we arrange.
LUXURY ACCOMMODATION BY SECTOR
Which sector you trek from determines which lodge you stay at — there’s no crossing between sectors on trekking morning. Here’s the standout high-end property in each of Bwindi’s four sectors.

BUHOMA SECTOR
The only accommodation actually inside Bwindi Impenetrable National Park — ten raised luxury tents in the forest itself, each with an en-suite bathroom and a private veranda. Unmatched proximity to the trailhead, and to the forest sounds at night.

RUHIJA SECTOR
Perched on Bugarama hill, the highest and coolest of Bwindi’s four sectors — eleven private cottages with panoramic views over the forest ridges toward the distant Virunga volcanoes. A quieter base than Buhoma, favoured by birders as much as trekkers.

RUSHAGA SECTOR
Home to the most habituated families of any sector and the only base for the Gorilla Habituation Experience. Eight spacious en-suite units with private verandas on a hillside above the sector’s trailheads, with volcano views on clear days.

NKURINGO SECTOR
Uganda’s original ultra-luxury gorilla lodge, and the country’s highest at over 2,000m — ten volcanic-stone cottages on a forested ridge with sweeping views into the Virunga volcanoes, steps from the Nkuringo trailhead. The most dramatic setting of any Bwindi sector, paired with the steepest approach trails.
