Nkuringo Sector, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Uganda
UGANDA’S HIGHEST LODGE, ON A FORESTED RIDGE AT 2,100 METRES
Clouds sits at 2,100 metres on a forested ridge above the Nkuringo trailhead, making it the highest lodge in Uganda and, on a clear day, one of the most dramatic settings in either country — panoramic views across the Virunga volcanoes from the lodge’s own grounds.
The property is intentionally exclusive and small, positioned as Uganda’s answer to Rwanda’s ultra-luxury Volcanoes properties, with stone cottages, fireplaces, and a genuinely remote, above-the-clouds atmosphere.
ROOMS
Stone-built cottages with fireplaces and floor-to-ceiling views over the ridge, finished to a standard that rivals Rwanda’s top Volcanoes properties while remaining distinctly Ugandan in material and design.
DINING
Dining takes place in the main lodge with panoramic ridge views, drawing on Ugandan produce grown at lower altitude and brought up to the property.
WILDLIFE & NATURE
The elevation and ridge setting put the lodge in genuine montane forest, with golden monkey range nearby and some of the best long-distance Virunga volcano views available from any accommodation in the region.
GOOD TO KNOW
At 2,100 metres, Clouds sits above the cloud line often enough on any given morning that the property’s name is more description than marketing — guests frequently wake to mist below the ridge burning off to reveal the Virunga volcanoes in the distance. The lodge’s small size and deliberate exclusivity mean days here feel unhurried even around the demands of the Nkuringo trek itself: mornings begin early for the gorilla trek, but the afternoon and evening are built around the fireplace, the ridge views, and a genuine sense of remoteness that larger properties elsewhere in Bwindi cannot replicate.
Because it was positioned deliberately as Uganda’s answer to Rwanda’s ultra-luxury Volcanoes National Park lodges, the finish and service level here sit at the very top of what Uganda’s gorilla-trekking circuit offers, distinguishing it clearly from the more mid-market properties common elsewhere in Bwindi.
Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge suits travellers who want Uganda’s single most dramatic lodge setting and are prepared to pay a genuine ultra-luxury premium for it — honeymooners, milestone-trip travellers, and guests who have already stayed at Rwanda’s top Volcanoes properties and want an equivalent Uganda experience rather than a step down in comfort. It suits the physically capable specifically, given its direct link to the demanding Nkuringo trek, more than travellers prioritising an easier trekking gradient.
GETTING THERE
Like the rest of Nkuringo sector, Clouds sits in the far south of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park near the Rwanda border, roughly 9–10 hours by road from Entebbe or Kampala — a drive most itineraries avoid by flying instead. Kisoro airstrip, served by scheduled light-aircraft flights from Entebbe in under two hours, puts you within a manageable drive of the lodge’s ridge-top access road. Given the border proximity, Clouds also combines naturally with a Volcanoes National Park stay on a combined Uganda & Rwanda itinerary.
WHY THIS LODGE
Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park has long held a reputation edge in ultra-luxury gorilla-trekking accommodation, with properties like Bisate and Singita Kwitonda setting the regional benchmark. Clouds was built specifically to close that gap on the Uganda side — matching the finish, service, and exclusivity of Rwanda’s top properties while offering a setting, at Uganda’s highest elevation, that none of them can replicate. For guests deciding between a Uganda or Rwanda gorilla-trekking base purely on lodge quality, Clouds removes that consideration from the decision entirely.
Is the altitude here a concern?
2,100m is well below altitudes that typically cause altitude sickness, though the lodge’s elevation
does mean noticeably cooler temperatures than lower-lying Bwindi accommodation — pack warm layers
accordingly.
How does Clouds compare to Nkuringo Bwindi
Gorilla Lodge nearby?
Both serve the Nkuringo trailhead; Clouds sits at a higher elevation with a smaller, more exclusive footprint
and an ultra-luxury positioning, while Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla
Lodge offers its own long-running, award-winning character at a different price point. We can advise
based on your priorities and budget.
Are the volcano views guaranteed?
Views depend on weather and cloud cover, which can obscure the distant Virunga peaks on any given day —
common at this elevation. Clear mornings and early evenings generally offer the best chances.
Is this a good choice for a honeymoon?
Yes — the combination of exclusivity, dramatic setting, and top-tier service makes it one of our most
frequently recommended properties for honeymoons and other milestone trips on the Uganda side.
How many nights should we plan here?
Two nights covers a single Nkuringo trekking permit comfortably; three nights allows more time to enjoy the
ridge-top setting and the surrounding guided walks.
Is the property suitable for less mobile
guests?
The lodge’s ridge-top position and its own grounds involve some uneven terrain and steps, and the
Nkuringo trek itself is physically demanding regardless of accommodation — guests with mobility
concerns should discuss this with us directly when planning the itinerary.
Few properties in the region change character across a single day the way Clouds does. Early mornings often bring genuine cloud cover below the ridge, giving the lodge its name and a sense of floating above the surrounding forest; by mid-morning, as the mist typically clears, the Virunga volcanoes become visible on the horizon, weather permitting. Afternoons settle into the quiet, unhurried rhythm the small property was designed around, and evenings bring the temperature drop that makes the private fireplaces in each cottage a genuine necessity rather than a decorative touch. Guests who build in enough time to experience the ridge across a full day — rather than treating the lodge purely as a base for the trek — tend to come away with the strongest impression of what makes the property distinctive.
