Nkuringo Sector, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Uganda
MULTI-AWARD-WINNING, ECO-BUILT LODGE ABOVE THE NKURINGO TRAILHEAD
Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge has won Uganda’s Leading Safari Lodge at the World Travel Awards eight times and holds a TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Award every year since 2015 — an unusually consistent track record for a property this size. It sits directly above the Nkuringo trailhead, serving both the Nkuringo and Rushaga sectors.
The lodge is entirely eco-built from locally sourced materials, using construction techniques drawn from the surrounding communities.
ROOMS
Cottages are built into the ridge with private verandas facing the Kashasha River valley and, beyond it, the forested slopes of Bwindi itself, using natural stone, timber, and thatch.
DINING
Meals are served with valley views from the main lodge, built around Ugandan produce and the lodge’s own kitchen garden where seasonally possible.
WILDLIFE & NATURE
The lodge overlooks the Kashasha River valley and the southern reaches of Bwindi, with forest birdlife and, from the ridge, some of the clearest long views into the park’s most physically demanding trekking sector.
GOOD TO KNOW
The lodge’s position directly above the Nkuringo trailhead means the sector widely considered Bwindi’s most physically demanding is also the one you can reach on foot, or with the shortest possible transfer, from your room. Days typically begin early with the valley visible from the dining terrace before departure, and end with the same ridge-top views at sunset — the Kashasha River valley and southern Bwindi forest laid out below in a way few other Bwindi properties can match given their more forested, enclosed settings.
Because the lodge also serves Rushaga sector for guests who prefer a gentler trekking gradient or are booked on the Gorilla Habituation Experience, it functions well as a base for groups with mixed fitness levels choosing different sectors on the same trip.
Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge suits travellers who want an award-recognised, genuinely eco-built property with dramatic ridge-top views, and who are comfortable with — or specifically seeking — the more demanding terrain the Nkuringo sector is known for. Its consistent award history (eight World Travel Awards wins, an unbroken TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice streak since 2015) also makes it a natural choice for guests who weigh third-party recognition heavily when choosing between comparable luxury properties.
GETTING THERE
Nkuringo sits in the far south of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, close to the Rwanda border, roughly 9–10 hours by road from Entebbe or Kampala — a long drive most itineraries avoid by flying instead. Kisoro airstrip, a relatively short drive from Nkuringo, is served by scheduled light-aircraft flights from Entebbe in under two hours, and is how we route the large majority of our Nkuringo-sector guests. The lodge’s proximity to the Rwanda border also makes it a natural stop on combined Uganda & Rwanda itineraries.
WHY THIS LODGE
Winning Uganda’s Leading Safari Lodge at the World Travel Awards eight times, and holding a TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Award every single year since 2015, is a genuinely uncommon consistency in a category where properties frequently win once and fade. That track record reflects sustained investment in the eco-built construction, the staff, and the guest experience over more than a decade, not a single standout season — and it’s the reason we recommend the lodge confidently to guests who want a property with a proven, long-term record rather than a newer, unproven alternative.
Is Nkuringo sector harder than other Bwindi sectors?
Generally yes — Nkuringo is widely considered Bwindi’s most physically demanding sector, with
steeper terrain than Buhoma or Ruhija. The lodge’s proximity to the trailhead helps, but the trek
itself still requires a reasonable baseline of fitness.
Can we trek Rushaga sector while staying
here?
Yes — the lodge serves both sectors, making it a flexible base if you want to keep options open between
Nkuringo’s dramatic terrain and Rushaga’s larger number of families or the Habituation Experience.
What makes the construction “eco-built”
specifically?
The lodge is built entirely from locally sourced materials using construction techniques drawn from
surrounding communities — a genuine commitment to low-impact building rather than a marketing label.
How does this compare to Clouds Mountain
Gorilla Lodge nearby?
Both sit in the Nkuringo area and offer excellent valley views; Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge has the more
extensive, longer-running award history, while Clouds Mountain
Gorilla Lodge offers its own distinct character. We can advise on the specific differences based on your
preferences.
How many nights should we plan here?
Two nights covers a single trekking permit comfortably; three nights allows time to enjoy the ridge-top
setting itself, which many guests find is worth lingering over.
Does the lodge combine well with a Rwanda
itinerary?
Yes — given its proximity to the Rwanda border, a stay here pairs naturally with a Volcanoes National
Park gorilla trek on the same trip. See our Uganda & Rwanda
Combined Itinerary for a sample routing.
Is the trek from the lodge itself difficult, or
only the gorilla trek?
The lodge grounds themselves are easy walking; it’s specifically the Nkuringo gorilla trek — the
descent into the valley and re-ascent afterward — that carries the sector’s reputation for
difficulty, not the lodge’s own paths or terraces.
