A NEWLY BUILT LUXURY BASE FIVE MINUTES FROM THE RUSHAGA GATE
Gorilla Leisure Lodge is one of the newest luxury properties in Bwindi, built specifically to serve the Rushaga sector — home to the Gorilla Habituation Experience and several of Bwindi’s most reliably visited gorilla families. The lodge sits roughly five minutes from the Rushaga gate.
Twelve rooms span a range from deluxe singles and doubles to family cottages, making it a practical luxury option for groups of mixed composition trekking the Rushaga sector together.
ROOMS
Rooms range from compact deluxe singles to larger family cottages, all finished to a contemporary standard with en-suite bathrooms and private outdoor space.
DINING
Dining is served in the main lodge building with a menu built around Ugandan staples and international options, sized to comfortably serve the property’s mixed-group guest base.
WILDLIFE & NATURE
The Rushaga sector is home to several of Bwindi’s most established gorilla families and the four-hour Gorilla Habituation Experience, making this lodge’s proximity to the gate a genuine practical advantage on trekking mornings.
GOOD TO KNOW
Being roughly five minutes from the Rushaga gate changes the shape of a trekking morning meaningfully — guests can wake later than at lodges further from the sector, and the short transfer means less time in a vehicle before the briefing even begins. This matters particularly for guests booked on the Gorilla Habituation Experience, whose four-hour sessions already make for a longer day than standard trekking; a short return transfer at the end of it is a genuine comfort.
Because the lodge is newly built with a contemporary, eco-conscious design, it suits travellers who want Bwindi’s forest setting without the more rustic feel of some of the region’s older properties — and the range from deluxe singles to family cottages makes it a practical choice for groups travelling together with varied room needs.
Gorilla Leisure Lodge suits travellers specifically booked into the Rushaga sector — whether for standard trekking or the Gorilla Habituation Experience — who prioritise proximity to the gate and a contemporary, newly built property over the longer established character of older Bwindi lodges. Its mix of room types also makes it a sensible base for families or small groups with different accommodation needs travelling together on the same permit.
GETTING THERE
The Rushaga sector sits in the far south of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, roughly 9–10 hours by road from Entebbe or Kampala — a long drive most itineraries avoid by flying instead. Kisoro airstrip, a short drive from Rushaga, is served by scheduled light-aircraft flights from Entebbe in under two hours, and is how we route the large majority of our Rushaga-sector guests. Because Rushaga also borders Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, the lodge combines naturally with a golden monkey trek or volcano hike on the same trip.
Why choose the Rushaga sector specifically?
Rushaga has more habituated gorilla families than any other Bwindi sector and is the only sector offering the
Gorilla Habituation Experience — a strong choice for repeat trekkers or larger groups needing multiple
permits on the same morning.
Is Gorilla Leisure Lodge suitable for
families?
Yes — the family cottages were designed specifically for this, and the short transfer to the gate is a
genuine advantage for families managing an early departure with children.
How does this compare to older Bwindi
lodges?
Gorilla Leisure Lodge offers a more contemporary, newly built feel with strong proximity to the gate; guests
wanting the more established, forest-immersed character of older properties might prefer
Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge or
Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge instead, both a short drive away.
Can we combine a stay here with Mgahinga
Gorilla National Park?
Yes — Rushaga’s proximity to Mgahinga makes a golden monkey trek or volcano hike a natural
addition to a Bwindi-based itinerary without significant extra travel time.
How many nights should we plan here?
Two nights covers a single trekking permit comfortably; three nights allows for the longer Gorilla
Habituation Experience or a second trekking attempt with a different family.
Is the lodge eco-friendly in practice, or just
in name?
The property was built with eco-conscious construction and operating practices from the outset — a
genuine design choice rather than a retrofit, reflecting a broader shift among Bwindi’s newer
properties toward lower-impact building near the park boundary. We can share more detail on the specific
practices in place if sustainability is a priority for your booking.
WHY THIS LODGE
Where many Bwindi lodges were built to serve a particular view or forest setting and simply happen to be near a trekking sector, Gorilla Leisure Lodge was built specifically to serve Rushaga — its location, room mix, and operations are all oriented around getting trekking groups to the gate efficiently and comfortably. For guests whose primary goal is a well-organised, low-friction trekking morning rather than an especially remote or rustic forest experience, that purpose-built focus is the property’s clearest advantage over older, more scattered alternatives in the wider Bwindi area, and it’s the reason we recommend it first for straightforward Rushaga itineraries where efficiency matters as much as atmosphere.
