227KM ALONG THE SHORE OF LAKE KIVU

Congo Nile Trail

START PLANNING ↓

The Congo Nile Trail traces the western edge of Rwanda for 227km, following the shoreline of Lake Kivu from Rubavu in the north to Rusizi in the south, through Rutsiro, Karongi, and Nyamasheke districts. It takes its name from the watershed it follows — rain falling on one side eventually reaches the Congo River, on the other the Nile.

The full trail runs through tea estates, coffee-washing stations, fishing villages, and forested ridgelines, with the lake in view for most of the route. We arrange it as a multi-day cycling or hiking itinerary, or as shorter one- and two-day sections combined with a Lake Kivu lodge stay.

BY BIKE5 days for the full route
ON FOOT10 days for the full route
BY KAYAK8 days, paddling sections of the lake shore

THE STAGES

The Trail in Sections

Rubavu to Kinunu. The northern start, leaving the lakeside town of Rubavu (Gisenyi) and climbing into the hills above the lake. Kinunu is known for its coffee-washing station, where you can follow the harvest from cherry to parchment.

Kinunu to Kibuye (Karongi). The most scenic stretch for many riders, with long views over the lake’s bays and islands before dropping to the town of Kibuye.

Kibuye to Nyamasheke. Quieter roads, tea estates and deeply indented shoreline. This is the least-visited part of the trail and the one that feels most remote.

Nyamasheke to Rusizi. The southern end at Kamembe and Rusizi, on the border with the DRC. From here it is a short drive to Nyungwe National Park, which makes the trail a natural link between Lake Kivu and Nyungwe’s chimpanzees.

You do not have to ride or walk the whole thing. The most popular version is two or three days on one section, with a support vehicle carrying luggage and picking up anyone who wants a break.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can we do just part of the trail?
Yes — most guests do. One- and two-day sections based from Rubavu or Kibuye are the most common.

Where do we sleep along the way?
Lakeside hotels at Rubavu and Kibuye, and simpler guesthouses on the quieter stretches. On a private trip, we route each day to end at the best available stay.

Who carries our luggage?
The support vehicle moves luggage between overnight stops, so you ride or walk with a daypack only.

Can it be combined with Nyungwe?
Yes. Finishing at the southern end puts you within a short drive of Nyungwe, for chimpanzee trekking and the canopy walkway.
