THE LAND OF A THOUSAND HILLS, BY BIKE

Rwanda Cycling Tours

Rwanda’s hills, terraced farmland, and quiet rural roads make it one of East Africa’s better-kept cycling secrets. Routes range from a half-day countryside ride near Kigali to the full multi-day Congo Nile Trail along Lake Kivu.

We arrange cycling as a standalone half- or full-day add-on, or as part of a longer Lake Kivu itinerary — mountain bikes and support vehicles included.

BIKE RENTAL$20–35 per day
GUIDED DAY RATE$60–120 per person per day, guide and support included
TERRAINHilly, mostly unpaved rural roads and trail sections

THE ROUTES

Where We Ride

Musanze and the twin lakes. From Musanze, rural roads drop towards Lakes Burera and Ruhondo, the two lakes below the Virunga volcanoes. It is the easiest ride to add to a gorilla itinerary: you are back at your Volcanoes lodge by mid-afternoon, and the views of Muhabura and Gahinga from the lake shore are some of the best in the north.

Kigali countryside. A half-day loop out of the capital through market villages and valley farmland, useful on an arrival or departure day when you have a few hours but do not want to sit in a hotel.

The Congo Nile Trail. The long-distance option — 227km of dirt road along Lake Kivu from Rubavu to Rusizi, usually ridden over five days with a support vehicle carrying luggage between lakeside stops. See the Congo Nile Trail page for the full route.

Rwanda takes cycling seriously — it hosts the Tour du Rwanda, a UCI-sanctioned stage race, and Kigali closes main roads to cars on its regular Car Free Days. Expect climbs on almost every route: the country sits between roughly 1,400m on Lake Kivu and 1,850m around Musanze, so even flat-looking rides involve sustained gradients at altitude.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do we need to be experienced cyclists?
Not for the half-day routes around Musanze or Kigali — reasonable general fitness is enough, and the support vehicle can pick up anyone who wants to stop. The multi-day Congo Nile Trail suits riders comfortable with several hours a day on hilly dirt roads.

Can we ride on the same day as a gorilla trek?
It is possible but rarely worth it. Gorilla treks start at around 7am and can run into the afternoon; we usually schedule a ride on a day either side so you are not rushing either.

Are e-bikes available?
Availability varies by operator and season. Tell us when you enquire and we will confirm what can be arranged for your dates.

When is the best time to cycle in Rwanda?
The dry seasons, June to September and December to February, give firmer roads and clearer volcano views. The long rains from March to May make dirt sections muddy and slow.
