ON THE RIM OF A CRATER LAKE
Kyaninga Lodge sits on the edge of Lake Kyaninga, one of the crater lakes north of Fort Portal, with the Rwenzori Mountains on the horizon. It is the most characterful place to stay for chimpanzee trekking in Kibale, which is under an hour away.
The lodge was hand-built from timber and thatch, and its eight cottages are linked to the main house by raised wooden walkways. The result feels more like a private country house than a safari lodge, which suits the slower rhythm of a Kibale stay.
ROOMS
Each cottage stands on its own platform for privacy, with a king-size bed, hand-carved furniture, a bathroom with a freestanding claw-foot bath and a private veranda looking straight down into the crater. Mornings start with mist lifting off the lake below.
ACTIVITIES
Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale is the main reason to be here, with an early departure and back by lunch. Afternoons are for the lodge itself: a swim in the crater lake, the pool, walks around the crater rim, or the Amabere caves and other crater lakes around Fort Portal. Bigodi Wetland, for birds and primates, is on the way to or from Kibale.
GOOD TO KNOW
How far is Kyaninga from the chimpanzee trek?
Under an hour’s drive to Kibale National Park. Your guide times the departure around your trekking slot.
Can we swim in the crater lake?
Yes. The lake is one of the lodge’s highlights, and guests swim and canoe there.
Is Kyaninga good for families?
The cottages, pool and lawns make it one of the easier luxury stays in Uganda for families. Chimpanzee trekking has a minimum age set by UWA, so tell us your children’s ages.
How does it fit into a Uganda circuit?
Usually between Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth National Park, or as the first stop on a southern circuit ending at Bwindi.
