TEN COTTAGES ON THE NORTHERN EDGE OF BWINDI, EACH WITH A FOREST VIEW
Buhoma Lodge sits on the northern boundary of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, its ten cottages spaced along a ridge with private balconies looking directly into the forest canopy below. It is one of the longest-established lodges in the Buhoma sector, with a settled, well-run feel.
The lodge works closely with the surrounding community, and a portion of revenue supports local development projects tied to the park.
ROOMS
Cottages are built from local materials and spaced for privacy along the ridge, each with an en-suite bathroom and a balcony positioned to catch the forest view and, often, the morning mist lifting off the canopy.
DINING
The dining area looks out over the same forest view as the cottages, with a menu built around Ugandan produce and a relaxed, communal atmosphere among guests returning from the day’s trek.
WILDLIFE & NATURE
The ridge-top setting is good for forest birdlife and, on clear mornings, distant views into the canopy where primates move through the treeline below the lodge.
GOOD TO KNOW
Buhoma Lodge’s long history in the sector shows in how smoothly a stay runs — from the pre-dawn breakfast ahead of the trekking briefing to the settled, communal dining atmosphere in the evening among guests comparing the day’s trek. The ridge-top cottages put the forest canopy directly below your balcony, and the morning mist lifting off the trees is often visible from your room before you’ve even left for the trailhead.
Buhoma sector itself is widely considered the gentlest of Bwindi’s four trekking sectors, and its long-established infrastructure — including the widest range of lodges of any sector — makes it a natural first choice for travellers new to gorilla trekking or Uganda more broadly.
Buhoma Lodge suits first-time trekkers and travellers who want a well-established, dependable property with a genuine community connection, rather than a newer or more experimental build. Its revenue-share model, supporting local development projects tied to the park, also appeals to guests who weigh a lodge’s community impact as part of their choice. The gentler Buhoma sector gradient makes it a sensible base for families, older travellers, or anyone prioritising a less physically demanding trekking sector.
GETTING THERE
Buhoma sits on Bwindi’s northern boundary, roughly 8–9 hours by road from Kampala or Entebbe — a long drive most itineraries avoid by flying instead. Kihihi airstrip, a relatively short drive from Buhoma, is served by scheduled light-aircraft flights from Entebbe in under two hours, and is how we route the large majority of our Buhoma-sector guests. Flying rather than driving also frees up time for a stop at the Buhoma Village Walk or an additional activity before your trek.
WHY THIS LODGE
Buhoma was the first sector opened for gorilla trekking in Uganda, and Buhoma Lodge’s long tenure here means the property has had decades to refine how a trekking day actually runs — timing, logistics, and the small details that make the difference between a smooth morning and a stressful one. Combined with genuine, long-standing community ties rather than a recently added revenue-share programme, the lodge offers a level of settled reliability that newer builds in less-established sectors can take years to match.
Is Buhoma sector easier than Nkuringo or Rushaga?
Generally yes — Buhoma is widely considered Bwindi’s gentlest sector in terms of typical terrain,
making it a strong choice for first-time trekkers, families, or less experienced hikers.
What is the Buhoma Village Walk?
A community-run cultural walk through the village bordering the park, offering context on local life and
history alongside the trekking experience — easily arranged from the lodge as a half-day addition.
How does Buhoma Lodge compare to Mahogany
Springs nearby?
Both sit in Buhoma sector with strong community ties; Buhoma Lodge offers a longer-established, ridge-top
setting, while Mahogany Springs Lodge has its own distinct character
and river-adjacent setting. We can advise based on your preferences.
Is the lodge suitable for children?
Yes, particularly given Buhoma sector’s gentler terrain — though the minimum age for gorilla
trekking itself remains 15, in line with UWA policy across all sectors.
How many nights should we plan here?
Two nights covers a single trekking permit comfortably; three nights allows time for the Buhoma Village Walk
or a second trekking attempt with a different family.
How does the community revenue-share
actually work?
A portion of the lodge’s revenue is directed toward local development projects tied to the park —
the specific programmes vary, and we can share more detail on current initiatives if this is a priority in
your choice of lodge.
Being Uganda’s original gorilla trekking sector means Buhoma carries an infrastructure advantage that newer sectors are still building toward — established ranger teams, well-marked trails, and a village economy genuinely built up around decades of tourism rather than a recent influx. That maturity translates into a trekking day with fewer surprises: routes are well understood, timing is predictable, and the wider sector, including lodges like Buhoma Lodge itself, has had the time to refine the guest experience in ways that are harder to replicate quickly elsewhere in Bwindi. For travellers who want gorilla trekking without the added variable of a newer, less-proven sector, that maturity is worth factoring into the decision.
