The biodiversity of the park, its bird community, and the range of accommodation options from basic to high-end luxury all argue for Bwindi as the substantive gorilla trekking destination.

The Case for Mgahinga
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is a small park — 33.7km² — positioned immediately south of Bwindi on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes at the point where Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC share a border. It has one habituated gorilla family, the Nyakagezi group, which ranges across the park’s small area and sometimes crosses into the Rwanda and DRC sections of the Virunga massif.

This unpredictability makes Mgahinga an inappropriate choice for visitors who have fixed international travel arrangements and cannot accommodate last-minute changes to their gorilla day.
Mgahinga’s Additional Activities
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park also offers golden monkey trekking — the same endemic Albertine Rift primate available at Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, at the same approximate altitude in the same volcanic forest habitat. The permit at Mgahinga is $100 per person. Mgahinga is a supplementary destination rather than a primary one: worth visiting for its golden monkey trekking and Virunga volcano access, with the Nyakagezi gorilla family as a potential addition when availability and the family’s location within Uganda permit.
