Bwindi vs Mgahinga for Uganda Gorilla Trekking — A Genuine Comparison
Uganda has two gorilla trekking destinations: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, with more than 20 habituated gorilla families spread across four sectors, and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, with a single habituated family. The permit cost is the same — $800 per person at both parks. Everything else about the two destinations is different, and the choice between them is straightforward once the distinctions are understood.
The Case for Bwindi
Bwindi is the correct choice for the great majority of gorilla trekking visitors to Uganda. More than 20 habituated families across four sectors means flexibility in family selection, sector choice, and date availability that Mgahinga’s single family cannot approach. For visitors who want to choose which type of encounter they experience — the established, deep-forest intimacy of Buhoma’s oldest families, the more open terrain of Ruhija’s high-altitude sector, or the volume of families and consistent availability of Rushaga — Bwindi provides those options. The biodiversity of the park, its bird community, and the range of accommodation options from basic to high-end luxury all argue for Bwindi as the substantive gorilla trekking destination.
For private gorilla trekking visitors — couples, small family groups, photographers — Bwindi provides the depth of family variety and sector character that allows a genuinely informed choice about what kind of experience to have. Bwindi is also the park with the established accommodation tier that private visitors expect: Bwindi Lodge and Mahogany Springs in Buhoma, Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge in Nkuringo, and several other well-regarded properties across the sectors.
The Case for Mgahinga
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is a small park — 33.7km² — positioned immediately south of Bwindi on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes at the point where Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC share a border. It has one habituated gorilla family, the Nyakagezi group, which ranges across the park’s small area and sometimes crosses into the Rwanda and DRC sections of the Virunga massif.
Mgahinga is the appropriate choice for two types of visitor: those whose specific interest is the Virunga volcanic landscape on the Uganda side of the border — the gorilla experience here happens in the volcanic forest environment that is more similar to Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park than to Bwindi’s lowland forest character; and those who are already in the Kisoro area for golden monkey trekking at Mgahinga and want to add a gorilla day without travelling to Bwindi.
Mgahinga has only a single habituated gorilla family, so permit availability is very limited — only eight permits per day are available, and when the Nyakagezi group has ranged into Rwanda or the DRC, trekking may be postponed or cancelled. This unpredictability makes Mgahinga an inappropriate choice for visitors who have fixed international travel arrangements and cannot accommodate last-minute changes to their gorilla day.
Mgahinga’s Additional Activities
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park also offers golden monkey trekking — the same endemic Albertine Rift primate available at Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, at the same approximate altitude in the same volcanic forest habitat. The permit at Mgahinga is $100 per person. For visitors combining a Uganda itinerary with golden monkey trekking, Mgahinga’s position on the Virunga slopes makes it the Uganda option for this activity, with the bonus of the potential gorilla day if availability permits.
Mgahinga also provides access to the Uganda section of the Virunga volcano chain — Mt Muhavura (4,127m, the same peak as Rwanda’s Muhabura), Mt Gahinga, and Mt Sabinyo are all hikeable from the Uganda side of the range. For visitors whose itinerary includes the Virunga volcanoes and who want to approach from Uganda rather than Rwanda, Mgahinga’s volcano hiking programme is the relevant option.
The Recommendation
Choose Bwindi unless you have a specific reason for Mgahinga. The depth of Bwindi’s gorilla trekking programme — families, sectors, accommodation, and overall infrastructure — makes it the correct choice for private gorilla trekking visitors to Uganda in almost all circumstances. Mgahinga is a supplementary destination rather than a primary one: worth visiting for its golden monkey trekking and Virunga volcano access, with the Nyakagezi gorilla family as a potential addition when availability and the family’s location within Uganda permit.
