Rwanda Gorilla Permit Documents — What You Need and When
Rwanda gorilla permit required documents are more straightforward than many visitors expect, but the specifics matter because permits are issued in individual names and verified against identity documents at the park gate. Arriving without the correct documentation risks being turned away regardless of how much you have paid. This guide covers exactly what is required at each stage of the booking and trekking process.
At the Time of Booking
Rwanda Development Board requires the following information for every person named on a gorilla trekking permit, at the time of booking through IREMBO or through a registered operator:
- Full name — exactly as it appears in the passport
- Passport number
- Date of birth
- Country of residence
- Email address
- Telephone number
For Foreign Residents in Rwanda seeking the resident rate, proof of Foreign Resident status (a valid work permit or diplomat card showing a minimum of four consecutive months’ residency) must be provided at the time of booking.
For EAC citizens seeking the EAC rate, an EAC national ID card or passport establishing EAC citizenship must be provided. EAC Foreign Residents need to show EAC residency documentation.
For students seeking the student rate, a current student identification card from an EAC member state institution is required, along with proof of EAC citizenship or EAC residency.
At the Park Gate on Trek Day
Every trekker must present the following at Kinigi Park Headquarters on the morning of the trek:
- Original passport or identity document — the same document whose number was provided at booking. A photocopy is not sufficient; the original is required for verification.
- Permit booking confirmation — a printed copy or digital version (on a phone or tablet) of the IREMBO confirmation email or operator booking reference. Park staff verify the booking reference against the permit record before the trek begins.
Visitor category is verified at the RDB point of sale and at the check-in point at the park prior to departure. Foreign Residents who booked at resident rates must present their Foreign Resident documentation (work permit, diplomatic card) at check-in.
Permits Are Not Transferable
Mountain gorilla trekking permits in Rwanda are issued in the name of the specific person who will trek. They are not transferable to another person under any circumstances. If a member of your group is unable to trek on the day — due to illness, accident, or any other reason — their permit cannot be used by a different person. The permit is effectively voided for that day.
This rule exists as part of the disease transmission management system: RDB needs to know exactly who was in the presence of each gorilla family on each day, for tracing purposes in the event of a health incident affecting either visitors or gorillas.
What Happens If You Forget Your Passport
Arriving at Kinigi without your passport creates a genuine problem. Park staff are required to verify identity against the permit booking record; without an original identity document, verification cannot be completed. The practical outcome depends on RDB’s assessment at the gate and may include a delay while a copy of the document is obtained, or, in the worst case, exclusion from the trek.
The straightforward solution: your passport should be on your person the night before the trek and the first thing in your day bag the morning of. It is the document on which a $1,500 permit depends. Do not leave it at the lodge safe.
Visa Requirements for Rwanda
Most international visitors entering Rwanda for gorilla trekking require a visa. Rwanda offers visa-on-arrival to citizens of many countries; citizens of EAC member states do not require a visa. Online visa applications are available through the Immigration and Citizenship Service of Rwanda. Confirm current visa requirements for your nationality before booking flights.
