Kigali to Volcanoes National Park — Getting There
The journey from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park covers approximately 115km and takes two to two and a half hours by road in good conditions — one of the most accessible major gorilla trekking destinations in Africa in terms of travel time from the international arrival point. Kigali International Airport to Musanze (the nearest town to the park) is a single, well-maintained road journey through the scenery of Rwanda’s Northern Province. This guide covers every option for the transfer.
The Road Journey — What to Expect
The road north from Kigali to Musanze follows the RN2 highway through a landscape that changes progressively as you leave the capital and move into the hills and agricultural zones of the north. The first hour out of Kigali passes through increasingly terraced countryside — the characteristic ridgelines and valley floors of Rwanda’s thousand hills, most of them cultivated to the upper slopes. Tea plantations begin to appear as the road gains altitude approaching the Northern Province.
The last 30 minutes before Musanze produces the most dramatic scenery of the journey: the Virunga volcanoes appear on the northern horizon — Karisimbi’s broad summit, the distinctive jagged ridge of Sabyinyo, Bisoke’s cone, and the others arrayed along the Rwanda-DRC-Uganda border. On clear mornings (most common in the dry season), the volcanoes are visible from a considerable distance and provide the first visceral confirmation that the scale of the landscape ahead is different from anything you have passed through on the road.
The road surface between Kigali and Musanze is consistently maintained and paved throughout. Travel time is approximately two hours to Musanze town and a further 15 minutes to the Kinigi Park Headquarters gate.
Private Vehicle Transfer — The Recommended Option
For private gorilla trekking groups, a private vehicle transfer with an experienced driver-guide is the appropriate arrangement. A private transfer provides flexibility on departure time, stops for photography along the route, commentary on the landscape and communities you pass through, and the security of door-to-door service rather than shared transport coordination.

Charter Flight Option
Musanze Airport, located near the town centre, receives charter flights from Kigali. The flight takes approximately 30 minutes — dramatically shorter than the road journey and offering an aerial perspective on the Virunga volcanoes that the road does not provide. Charter flights are arranged through operators and are priced per flight rather than per seat, making them cost-effective for groups of four or more.
For private groups on tight schedules, for honeymoon or anniversary trips where the experience of the journey matters, or for visitors who find long road journeys uncomfortable, the charter option is worth considering. The landing approach to Musanze with the Virunga volcanoes in close view is itself a memorable experience.
Timing the Journey
Gorilla trekking briefings begin at 07h00 at Kinigi Headquarters. To arrive for the briefing with sufficient time, departure from Kigali hotels should be no later than 04h00–04h30 — meaning an early start that most visitors find manageable once given the context of what the morning holds.
An alternative arrangement — strongly recommended for first-time visitors and for private groups — is to lodge near the park the night before the trek. Properties in Musanze or Kinigi eliminate the early-morning Kigali departure, allow for an easier morning, and provide the opportunity to acclimatise slightly to the altitude of the Northern Province before a high-altitude trek day.
What to See Along the Route
The road between Kigali and Musanze passes through several communities worth noting for visitors interested in Rwanda beyond the parks. The market town of Nyabihu provides a snapshot of northern Rwandan agriculture. The tea estates at higher altitude — some offering tours by arrangement — explain Rwanda’s significant tea export economy. The approach to Musanze itself is framed by increasingly close views of the Virunga volcanoes as the road rounds the last hillside before the Northern Province opens up.
For private groups with a scheduled early departure and flexibility in the journey, stops along the route for photography of the terraced landscape and volcano views are easily accommodated by a good driver-guide.
