Volcanoes National Park Rwanda — Everything You Need to Know

Volcanoes National Park is Rwanda’s flagship conservation area — 160km² of high-altitude volcanic forest on the Rwandan flank of the Virunga Massif, protecting more than twelve habituated mountain gorilla families, two habituated golden monkey groups, and some of the most dramatic volcano hiking in East Africa. The park is also where Dian Fossey conducted her ground-breaking gorilla research, and where the conservation movement that brought mountain gorillas back from the edge of extinction took root.

This guide covers every aspect of visiting Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda — the experiences available, the permit costs, the lodges, and the logistical details that shape how a visit works.

Location and Getting There

Volcanoes National Park is located in Rwanda’s Northern Province, approximately 115km northwest of Kigali. The drive from Kigali International Airport to Musanze — the nearest town to the park — takes approximately two and a half hours on a well-paved road through terraced hills, tea plantations, and the increasingly dramatic landscape of the Northern Province. From Musanze, the park gate at Kinigi is a further 15 minutes.

Charter flights from Kigali to Musanze Airport are available for private groups — a 30-minute flight option that removes the road journey. We arrange charter transfers as part of private Rwanda gorilla itineraries when the time saving and comfort justify the cost.

Best Time to Visit

Volcanoes National Park can be visited year-round. The two dry seasons — June to September and December to February — offer the most comfortable trekking conditions with firmer trails and clearer skies. These are also the busiest periods; gorilla permits sell out months in advance for peak season dates.

The long rains (March–May) and short rains (November) produce muddier trails and less predictable weather, but also lower permit prices ($1,050 with qualifying combined itinerary), quieter parks, and richer vegetation. Many photographers prefer the overcast light of the wet season for both gorilla and landscape work.
