Uganda Gorilla Permit Booking — How the System Works
Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) manages the gorilla permit system for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park — a different system from Rwanda’s IREMBO platform but with the same core structure: a fixed daily permit allocation per habituated gorilla family, sold through an official booking channel with required visitor identification information. Understanding how the UWA permit system works in practice — and how it differs from Rwanda’s system — allows efficient booking without the frustrations that the common misunderstandings of the Uganda system produce.
Permit Cost and What It Includes
The Uganda gorilla trekking permit costs $800 per person for international visitors (citizen rates and East Africa Community member rates are different and substantially lower). The $800 permit includes: the park entrance fee for the gorilla trek day, the ranger guide service during the trek, and the one-hour gorilla family encounter. It does not include porter services (charged separately, typically $15–20 per porter per trek), accommodation, or transfers to and from the park headquarters. The $800 price point is a considered positioning below Rwanda’s $1,500 — a deliberate price differentiation that maintains Uganda as the value alternative in the mountain gorilla trekking market.
The UWA Online Booking System
Uganda Wildlife Authority operates an online permit booking platform at the UWA website that allows direct booking by individual visitors without an operator intermediary. The system requires: full passport details for each permit holder, the preferred trek date, the preferred Bwindi sector (Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, or Nkuringo), and advance payment by credit card. The online system checks real-time availability and confirms the permit immediately on payment. UWA’s online permit system is functional but has occasional technical issues — the credit card processing can be unreliable with some international cards, and the system sometimes requires multiple attempts for successful payment. If the online system is not functioning, booking through a UWA-registered operator who has a direct permit booking relationship is the alternative.
Sector Selection
The Bwindi sector selection is the most consequential booking decision beyond the date itself. Each sector has different habituated families, different trek difficulty profiles, and different available accommodation nearby. Buhoma is the most established and most frequently visited sector, with the Mubare, Habinyanja, and Rushegura families; Rushaga has the most families and the most permit availability; Ruhija is the most productive for birding; and Nkuringo has the most dramatic gradient but the fewest accommodation options adjacent to the headquarters. The sector choice should follow the family research — identifying which family at which sector matches your physical capacity and experience interests before booking the permit sector.
Lead Time
Bwindi gorilla permits sell out less far in advance than Rwanda permits for most of the year — a combination of the larger total daily allocation (more habituated families across four sectors produces more daily permits) and lower overall demand. The specific advice: for June-September peak season, book six to nine months in advance. For October-November shoulder season, three to six months. For January-March, two to four months. For April-May, one to three months (lowest demand period, best availability).
