The gorilla filming permit in Rwanda has a distinct fee structure from the standard visitor permit, and the requirements differ significantly depending on whether you are a solo photographer, a small photography tour, or a documentary film crew. Rwanda Gorilla Filming and Professional Photography Fee Structure
The RDB filming and photography fee structure for mountain gorillas in Rwanda has two components, both of which are required for professional production work:
Base Filming Fee — $5,000 for Three Consecutive Days
The base gorilla filming permit costs $5,000 and covers three consecutive days of mountain gorilla filming and professional photography at Volcanoes National Park. This permit applies to individuals and to productions working at the level of a standard gorilla trekking group — it grants professional photography and filming rights for the duration, in addition to the standard trekking access provided by the gorilla permit or Exclusive Experience booking.
The three-day consecutive requirement means the permit is structured for sustained photographic work rather than single-day visits. For photographers combining gorilla work with other Volcanoes National Park subjects — golden monkeys, landscape, the volcanic terrain itself — three consecutive days provides the time needed to work across multiple conditions and subjects.
Film Crew Permit — $12,000 Per Day
For productions involving a film crew with multiple personnel — a director, cinematographer, sound recordist, and additional crew — an additional crew permit is required at $12,000 per day per crew of up to eight people. This fee is charged in addition to the base filming fee. A production spending three days in Volcanoes National Park with a crew of five would therefore pay: $5,000 (base filming permit) + $36,000 (3 days x $12,000 crew permit) = $41,000 in filming fees, before gorilla trekking permits or Exclusive Experience costs.
The maximum crew size covered by the $12,000 daily fee is eight people — the same maximum group size as the gorilla trekking permit. This alignment is intentional: the crew cannot exceed the size permitted in the presence of the gorilla family.
Additional Filming Fees at Volcanoes National Park
For productions that need to film within Volcanoes National Park without gorillas — landscape footage, vegetation, the Virunga volcanoes, ranger operations — a separate filming permit applies:

This is relevant for documentary productions that need contextual footage of the park environment, or for productions combining gorilla filming with broader Virunga landscape work.
Filming Fees at Nyungwe National Park
For productions working in Nyungwe National Park — chimpanzee filming, canopy walkway footage, or other Nyungwe subjects — separate fees apply:
- Chimpanzee filming — $1,000 per group per day
- Other products in Nyungwe — $600 per group per day
Who Needs a Rwanda Gorilla Filming Permit
The distinction between visitor photography (covered by the standard gorilla permit) and professional photography requiring a separate filming permit is significant and worth understanding before applying.
The standard gorilla trekking permit includes the right to photograph gorillas for personal, non-commercial use. Smartphones, personal cameras, and photography undertaken purely for the visitor’s own records or social media does not require a separate filming permit.
The professional photography and filming permit is required for:
- Documentary film productions of any scale
- Commercial photography — images intended for publication, advertising, editorial, or stock sale
- Dedicated gorilla photography tours where photography is the primary commercial purpose of the visit
- Television and streaming productions
- Corporate film and photography work
If there is any uncertainty about whether your intended use requires a filming permit, the appropriate approach is to apply for one. RDB takes permit compliance seriously, and production work conducted without the appropriate permit risks losing all access.
Private Gorilla Photography Tours — What the Exclusive Experience Adds
For serious wildlife photographers, the optimal Rwanda gorilla photography arrangement combines two products:
- The Exclusive Mountain Gorilla Experience ($15,000 per group) — for private, unobstructed access to the gorilla family during the one-hour encounter
- The professional photography filming permit ($5,000 for three consecutive days) — for the right to use the resulting images commercially
The Exclusive Experience’s family selection flexibility means you can work with your operator and the park to request a family known for its behaviour in open ground, or one whose range covers terrain with better natural light. The flexibility in starting time (08h00–11h00) allows departure timed to the morning light rather than the pre-dawn standard departure.
For multi-day gorilla photography tours, the Behind the Scene Package ($15,000 for minimum three visitors, three consecutive days) offers the most comprehensive photography access available — combined with the $5,000 filming permit and potentially the $12,000 daily crew fee if a production team is involved.
How to Apply for a Rwanda Gorilla Filming Permit
Gorilla filming permits in Rwanda are not available through the standard IREMBO public portal. Applications must be submitted to RDB through a licensed Rwanda-based tour operator, with the following documentation:
- Production company details and credentials
- Nature of the production (documentary, commercial photography, editorial, etc.)
- Intended dates and duration
- Names and passport details of all crew members
- Equipment list (cameras, lenses, sound equipment, lighting)
- Confirmation of gorilla trekking permits or Exclusive Experience booking
Lead time for filming permit applications varies. For major documentary productions, begin the application process a minimum of three months before the intended filming dates. For smaller photography work, six to eight weeks is typically sufficient. Peak season dates (June–September) require earlier application.
