Gorilla Trekking Lodges at Bwindi — Choosing the Right Property
The accommodation market at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park spans a wider range than the concentrated luxury market around Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park — Bwindi has four trekking sectors across a large area of forest, each with its own cluster of accommodation options, and the properties range from community guesthouses at budget price points to some of the most accomplished eco-lodges in East Africa. Choosing the right property involves matching the accommodation character to the sector where your gorilla family permit is assigned, as well as the broader priorities of your Uganda itinerary.
Buhoma Sector — The Established Circuit
The Buhoma sector in the north of Bwindi is the original gorilla trekking area — the first habituated families were established here, the first lodges were built here, and the infrastructure of the Buhoma park headquarters, the community project village walk, and the lodge cluster have the deepest integration of any Bwindi sector. The lodges in the Buhoma cluster include the Bwindi Lodge (a small, well-regarded property with six cottages in forest position), the Gorilla Forest Camp (a Sanctuary Retreats property with a direct forest boundary setting), and the community-operated Buhoma Lodge. The Forest Camp’s position — immediately adjacent to the park boundary, where gorilla families regularly move through the lodge’s immediate surroundings in the early morning — is the most intimate forest-lodge relationship of any Bwindi property.
Rushaga Sector — Most Permit Options
The Rushaga sector in the south of Bwindi has the highest number of habituated gorilla families of any sector — at the time of writing, six families are available for trekking from the Rushaga headquarters — which makes it the sector with the greatest permit availability and the most consistent access for late bookings. The accommodation at Rushaga includes Chameleon Hill Lodge (an eccentrically decorated, lake-view property on a hillside above Lake Mutanda with views of the Virunga volcanoes), Gorilla Leisure Lodge, and several smaller properties. Chameleon Hill Lodge’s combination of the dramatic mountain setting, the lake view, and the distinctive interior design makes it one of the most photographed lodge properties in southwest Uganda.
Nkuringo Sector — The Ridge with a View
The Nkuringo sector in the southwest of Bwindi provides access to a single gorilla family from a ranger station on the ridge that forms the park’s southwestern boundary — a ridge that looks directly at the Virunga volcanoes on the Rwanda border, providing one of the most dramatic landscape positions of any Bwindi sector. Clouds in the Nkuringo (an old camp with a new build) and the Nkuringo Gorilla Camp are the primary accommodation options. The trek from the Nkuringo sector into the gorilla’s range involves a descent into the valley from the ridge and a return ascent — the most physically demanding sector configuration in Bwindi, and the one that produces the most leg-muscle fatigue on the return. The views from the ridge compensate substantially for the physical demand.
Ruhija Sector — High Altitude and Serious Birds
Ruhija in the northeast of Bwindi is the highest-altitude sector — at 2,300 metres, it sits above most of Bwindi’s lower forest zones — and it is the sector most sought-after by birders for the montane forest species that reach their greatest concentration in the upper Bwindi elevation range. The Gorilla Mist Camp and Ruhija Gorilla Friends Camp are the primary accommodation options at the Ruhija sector. The gorilla families trekked from Ruhija include some of the park’s less frequently visited groups, and the trek terrain at Ruhija is among the most scenically dramatic in Bwindi — open sections of the upper forest with views over the tea-plantation mosaic of the surrounding landscape.
